Hi,

I have emerged xserver and gnome some time ago and I do not need to use it pretty much. But sometimes.

Now after doing some trial with different kernels I have come to the following problem:

Under kernel 2.6.20 startx starts Gnome and I can use it. At least for my few purposes. But anyway after logout I get error messages:

I cannot really interprete the messages and as I have no experience with the GUI I do not know how to correct.

Now I have installed the kernel 2.6.24-rc7-zen1. No problem with it so far.
But with startx the system tries to start and then stops with the following messages:

So what is wrong now? I cannot run Gnome here. Booting with 2.6.20 at least allows to use Gnome.

How to overcome the problem and what are the right steps to solve it?

Thx

Uli

I'm assuming you're using the gentoo-sources package to upgrade your kernel. Have you tried using 2.6.23.9 which is currently the most stable version?

I'm just using Gentoo to prepare software for a small linux distro (spblinux) in combination with audio stuff.

Therefore I'm trying to follow the developments at zen-sources under realtime aspects.
So I have not tried to use 2.6.23.9.

But 2.6.24-rc3-zen3 allows to start Gnome too, it generates the same messages like 2.6.20.

So my first question is: how to avoid the messages when Gnome runs? I assume that still something is not fully ok.

My second question: how to analyze what has changed between 2.6.24-rc3-zen3 and 2.6.24-rc7-zen1 regarding Gnome. I only have the already quoted messages.

OK. Non-expert analysis:

First from the working X log:
Module "whatever" already built-in -- means you can remove it from xorg.conf module loading section
Sis DRI driver and DDX version -- Looks like DDX is a separate but married part of DRI. http://wiki.x.org/wiki/DRI2 Try updating both to newest versions.
AIGLX error and software rendering -- X won't be 3D accelerated. Application programs aren't affected by this, but compositing window managers are going to run very slowly or not start at all.
xkeyboard errors -- Looks like a few syntax errors in the xkeyboard map file that you are using. The buttons for the functions specified (BrightnessUp, BrightnessDown ... ) aren't going to work. Everything else will.
Font path errors -- A couple of the paths specified in xorg.conf don't actually exist. You can remove them from xorg.conf or ignore the error.
Resource temporarily unavailable -- I'm not sure on this. Perhaps it is a typo in a configuration file somewhere and it is supposed to be 'xorg.freedesktop...'
Gnome panel and GDM -- I'm guessing you don't have GDM installed or you are not running it. Gnome is complaining about it, but it shouldn't hurt anything.

Do the Gnome panel and window manager errors show up in /var/log/Xorg.0.log, or only in the console? I'm thinking that those aren't really related to starting and running X.

Now the non-working X log:
Modules built-in -- again you can take them out of xorg.conf
Signal 11 and backtrace -- This is where it is trying to give info about why it couldn't start X.

If I remember right, signal 11 is a segmentation fault - meaning that something was trying to access memory out of range.
In the backtrace I am seeing a handful of kernel drivers: libc.so.6, sis_drv.so, and libpthread.so.0.

You could try deleting these files and re-compiling them, but it may be a bug in the kernel version you are using. Kernels and kernel modules are programs like any other and are not above having bugs and seg-faults in them. I remember that gentoo-sources-2.6.20 wasn't able to use my SATA hard drive and so couldn't boot. 2.6.19 and 2.6.21 and beyond all work fine.

I will try to study your tips and report back. Or ask some more questions :)

Thanks first.
