|
|
I am taking a survey regarding the internet connections that is used to access
Gentoo. This is a unofficial survey not connected with gentoo.org
Here are the survey questions :
(1) Do you use a broadband( 24hrs ) connection for access gentoo( yes or no)
(2) Do you think 24hours connection forms the majority ( or equivalent)
of the Internet connections in your country ( US or europe)
(3) Do you think, that 24hrs connections is required for really experiancing the terrific download and the hectic compile process of gentoo
Thanks in advance |

Gentoo is very slow-inet unfriendly. Whilst there could be things done about this, it needs somebody to take a stand and address the issue. Understandably, it appears it is not a priority for most Gentoo devs. _________________ Want Free games?

1) Yes
2) No (but the majority has flat-rate broadband, don't want to be online 24/7 I guess)
3) No. You could ask someone to download the packages you need and put them where they are downloaded ^^. I recommend flat-rate internet regardless of Gentoo usage or not, though. |

Yes
No (glad to see Americans have worked out there is a world outside their borders, I guess it's only time till they realise that Europe isn't a country and that other countries besides do exist)[1]
Probably, but I'm sure you could survive without broadband.
[1]: Sorry, I realise plenty of Americans don't match the image anti-Americans paint of them, I just found the 'in your country (US or Europe)' incredibly stupid. |

I regret that grammer mistake.
What i meant was 'your' country in europe and not europe as a country.
As I thought it is un-neccessary to list each and every country in that CONTINENT |

1. No. I'm on 56k, although real dialup, not AOL, MSN, ETC...
2. No. Around here it's still sort-of novel to have cable. I'm waiting for DSL availability, or hell to freeze over.
3. No. I just download ebuids at school or friends houses. I compile later. I know what I want though. No kde, gnome, emacs, vim, nano, nedit, kdevelop, everyfoobaralternative on my system. I pick one thing and use it. It's my only choice really.
Also, if anyone knows of any reliable dialup ISP's, let me know. |

1. Yes
2. No
3. No (I used to run Gentoo on 56k dialup, it wasn't a problem) _________________ a.k.a port001

(1) Yes, ADSL.
(2) No, defnitely not in the UK. Most of those with Internet access have a 56k dial up.
(3) No. So long as you have a _fast_ connection (I'd say minimum 512kbps ADSL/Cable), then so long as that connection can be switched on whenever you need it, there's no need for it to actually be connected 24/7.

YNY. On the third, I should qualify it - I high speed connection is more important than a 24hr connection. That's true of any net-install/upgrade of any distro though (perhaps MORE true of Gentoo). It's not impossible over dial-up, just painful. _________________ "An empty head is not really empty; it is stuffed with rubbish. Hence the difficulty of forcing anything into an empty head."
