Background info: I have a maxtor ata133 pci card (PDC 20269 controller). I have a master + slave combo on the first ide of the card and a single drive on the second ide of the card. In addition, I have a Sony cd-rw on ide1 of the motherboard.

I have compiled reverse mapping of the ide in the kernel so that ide1/2 of that ata card are hda & hdc respectively and the motherboards ide become hde/g respectively.

So, what I have is hda, hdb, hdc drive configuration with hde = cdrw.

THE PROBLEM: hdc is not working. I have tried two Western Digital 40 gig drives, an 8 gig Seagate, and a 40 gig Quantum Fireball. The two WD and the Seagate get recongized as hdc , however they are not accessible. I can not even cfdisk /dev/hdc without getting an error. The Quantum Fireball gets recognized as hdd (not hdc) , however it is accessible. The Promise controller recognizes the two WD drives and the Seagate drives as drives 2, whereas it recognizes the Quantum drive as 3 (note: the drive numbers are 0,1,2,3 for the ata promise controller).

Here is a partial listing of dmesg with the Seagate Drive:

I found the problem. I failed to change hdc=ide-scsi in grub.conf
