ok, I ran emerge xfree & emerge kde - These finally both finished. However, when I do a startx I get an error about no screens available. How do I specify a screen to use? I tried startx :1

Did you run xf86config to generate /etc/X11/XF86Config <-- the file that is used for configuring X?

If you look at /var/log/XFree86.0.log it'll tell you where it's running into a problem. Look above the "no screens" message to see what specifically caused it.

i am not sure, but this really does sound like a vc problem. usually when it says "no screens detected" this means that the xf86config file doesn't exist, or it isn't configured correctly for your hardware. try to find out exactly what video card you have in your system, maybe by calling you computer companies tech support if you bought it, or you could just open it and take a look, then rerun xf86config and be pretty careful about what you put in. alot of times it can just be a typo that screws everything up.

This machine is a dualboot with RH9 (i know i know...but i need it for support reasons).

That one works fine...would I be able to just copy over that XF86Config ?

do you have your video card drivers installed? or are they included with the default packages?

you could do a
Code:
cat /proc/pci

to see where your video card is located in the PCI Bus.

you should make sure that you vc drivers are installed, alot of times they come with x, but for certain cards like some ati or nvidia, you have to install them separately. if your vc drivers are not installed, then thats your problem. if they come with x, and you are using the same version of x with red hat as you are with gentoo, then i don't see why you couldn't just copy over you xf86 config from your redhat partition, and that should fix it.

Two things I would try:

  • try to create an XF86Config file using the command:
    Code:

    XFree86 -configure

    This may work.
  • copy over the RedHat configuration file. You may have to adjust font-paths, but I have done this before and it works fine.

Or better yet, copy your RH XF86Config file over to your Gentoo home directory then compare it and the /etc/X11/XF86Config file side-by-side to see what makes one work and one not. That way you learn more. :)
