how come some programs are not working with gtk2? i've had USE="gtk2" since the day i got gnome2. i've since updated/reinstalled grip, xmms, and xcdroast...all of them still use gtk1. back when i used mozilla, that didn't work either. is there something i need to do to make these programs work with gtk2? or is it just because the developers of the programs are releasing versions without gtk2? if the latter...does anyone know when (if ever) these programs are scheduled to use gtk2? thanks.

its the latter. gtk1 and 2 are totally different libraries, and developers just aren't moving towards gtk2 as fast as alot of people would like, but i don't know when these programs will come out with gtk2 versions.

For future reference, you can use the -v flag when pretending to emerge and it will show you what flags are used with a package.

Ex.:
Code:
# emerge xmms -pv

These are the packages that I would merge, in order:

Calculating dependencies ...done!
[ebuild   R  ] media-sound/xmms-1.2.7-r20  -xml +nls +esd -gnome +opengl +mmx +oggvorbis +3dnow +mikmod +directfb -ipv6 -cjk

Alternatively, you can use etcat (part of gentoolkit I believe):
Code:
# etcat uses xmms
...
 U I [ Found these USE variables in : media-sound/xmms-1.2.7-r20 ]
 - - xml       : Check/Support flag for XML library (version 1)
 + + nls       : unknown
+ - esd       : Adds support for media-sound/esound (Enlightened Sound Daemon)
 - - gnome     : Adds GNOME support
+ + opengl    : Adds support for OpenGL
+ + mmx       : Adds support for optimizations for Pentium MMX and Athlon class processors
+ + oggvorbis : Adds support for the OggVorbis audio encoding
 + + 3dnow     : Adds support for 3dnow multimedia processor instructions
+ + mikmod    : Adds libmikmod support to allow playing of SoundTracker-style music files
+ + directfb  : Adds support for DirectFB layer (library for FB devices)
 - - ipv6      : Adds support for IP version 6
 - - cjk       : Adds support for Multi-byte character languages (Chinese, Japanese, Korean)
...
