This might seem like an odd question, but I can't make heads or tails of NVIDIA's versioning system for their drivers.
Normally the driver with the highest version number is the one you should run.
But with NVIDIA there are several series of drivers which seems to be updated in parallel?
As an example (outtake from NVIDIA driver archive listing):
Code: |
Linux Display Driver - x86
Version: 96.43.05
Operating System: Linux x86
Release Date: January 29, 2008
Linux Display Driver - x86
Version: 71.86.04
Operating System: Linux x86
Release Date: January 29, 2008
Linux Display Driver - x86
Version: 169.07
Operating System: Linux x86
Release Date: December 20, 2007
Linux Display Driver - x86
Version: 100.14.19
Operating System: Linux x86
Release Date: September 18, 2007
|
How come the 71- and 90-series are updated after the 169-series? Which should I run?
According to the supported devices list they all have support for my card (Quadro 570M)
I would like a driver which can use the latest version of xrandr correctly (or at least one with output hotplug support).
Anyone who can shed some light on this?
Thanks

Because new cards require drivers with new features that older cards can't support.
It is a branching system, just like any other, check the nvidia site to get info on supported models for each branch.
http://www.nvidia.com/object/unix.html
From there you click on the branch you want to read about, then, on the next page, you click on the "Supported Products List" link on the left, to see the list of supported devices for that branch. Once you emerge the drivers, you can also see that on the nvidia docs, under /usr/share/doc/nvidia-drivers-<version> |
