Hi,

After I upgraded from <2.6.20 to >2.6.23 my disc which was sda before was renamed to hda. I think this is due libata activation. My problem is that actually i'm not able to activate DMA and disc transfer is very SLOW.

Code:

# hdparm -Tt /dev/hda6

/dev/hda6:
 Timing cached reads:   4982 MB in  2.00 seconds = 2495.54 MB/sec
 Timing buffered disk reads:   12 MB in  3.46 seconds =   3.46 MB/sec

I'm using 2.6.23 actually and I get this output from dmesg:
Code:

Linux version 2.6.23-gentoo (root@FRY) (gcc version 4.2.2 (Gentoo 4.2.2 p1.0)) #4 SMP PREEMPT Tue Dec 18 20:48:21 CET 2007

With 2.6.24-rc7-git7 dmesg. (I disabled "AHCI SATA support" but same results with hdparm)

I also upgraded bios from A05 to A07 with no new results. The system is almost unusable with some I/O. Any idea?!

Hi

Had similar problems.
Fixed thanx to this guy: http://guido-flohr.net/dell/latitude-d820/#Harddisk

I assume that this works for 2.6.23 as well but haven't tested yet.

Let me know if it works for you :-)

FTR hdparm reports for my setup:
Code:

# hdparm -Tt /dev/sda

/dev/sda:
 Timing cached reads:   6754 MB in  1.99 seconds = 3387.84 MB/sec
 Timing buffered disk reads:  102 MB in  3.03 seconds =  33.70 MB/sec

I had that problem 6 to 10 months ago (I think with a 2.6.18 kernel) and the disabling of generic_ide definitely did the trick.

Yes, this solution worked for me with 2.6.23 and 2.6.24 and 2.6.22. I know this because I have all 3 kernels installed at the moment.
