hello, i want to ask a question, is there any way that i can know which libraries are orphaned in my system, like for example:

i few days ago i emerged evolution just to check it out, and it installed a lot of gnome libs as dependencies, but i didnt like evolution that much so i removed it from my system, but all those gnome libs (i dont use gnome) continued here without being needed for anything else.

Does anyone had this idea and made something about it, or just like to know which libs does a package needs, but like that way i may remove some libs that others programs need.

If anyone knows any kind of good answer please post :)

Regards,
Pedro de Oliveira

portage needs some work in this area..

Portage should be able to check individual packages for deps, create a universal list, and then select packages that arent needed. How this could be done.. I dunno.. I'm not even sure if depclean does it that way...

this is my idea for a solution:

any package should have a used-counter. if it is installed manually or required from annother package, the counter is incremented by 1. if a package is removed the counter is subtracted by 1. if a counter reaches 0, it will be automatically removed by default. you also cannot remove packages manually that are still requeired from annother package (overrideable). packages that are installed from first setup, such like modutils, get an initial counter of 1 or a special flag set.

this method would never delete packages, that are installed manually.
