I'm just wondering how to tell if my nVidia card is in power savings mode or not, and how to put it in power saving mode. |

Idle (that is, 2D) is a power savings mode. All recent NVIDIA cards have 2D/3D modes which they switch from depending on how many calculations they need to do. To put it in a savings mode just don't use any software that would display 3D renderings on your screen. |

Is there a way to check which mode it's in? Obviously running compiz puts it into 3d, but would the default gnome desktop (no widgets or anything fancy, transparnecies on my terminal) ever kick it into 3D mode? |

With Compiz and OpenGL screen savers disabled, that should be fine. The standard GNOME terminal transparency feature doesn't use 3D acceleration as far as I know. _________________ "Be excellent to each other" - Bill & Ted |
