This is one of a series of problems that occurred after the last -uD world.
GDM was upgraded to 2.20.3 from 2.20.2.
When the system comes up to the GDM screen I enter user name and
then password, The screen changes and I hear the login sound play, but no
splash screen. Instead I go back to the GDM screen. Login again and I get
the login sounds, splash screen and Desktop comes up.
Re-emerging 2.20.2 fixes the problem.
I deleted all gdm logs and after bringing up the system I have two logs. I have
shown the differences below:

Code:

Seems like for some reason gdm shut down, the first time.

In /etc/make.conf add the USE flag input_devices_evdev and do a emerge --update --newuse world. The new version of Gnome is causing xorg to load the evdev driver.

You need to do that :

Edit your /etc/make.conf and check for this line

Code:

INPUT_DEVICES="kbd keyboard mouse"

Code:

INPUT_DEVICES="kbd keyboard mouse [color=red]evdev[/color]"

After that, you will need to run this command :

Code:

# emerge -uDnv world

And for the record, evdev inside input_devices in not a use flag, it's an indication for X.ORG to compile the hardware that you will use with X.

Thanks very much for the replies.
I added the evdev stuff but it made no difference.
Code:

don don # more /etc/make.conf

CFLAGS="-march=pentium4 -O2 -fomit-frame-pointer"
CXXFLAGS="${CFLAGS}"
ACCEPT_KEYWORDS="~x86"
INPUT_DEVICES="kbd keyboard mouse [color=red]evdev[/color]"
VIDEO_CARDS="radeon ati vesa"

tech.edu/pub/gentoo http://mirror.datapipe.net/gentoo http://chod.cwru.edu/gento
o"
PORT_ENOTICE_DIR=/var/tmp/portage/enotice/

don don # emerge -avDn world

These are the packages that would be merged, in order:

Calculating world dependencies... done!
[ebuild     U ] gnome-base/gdm-2.20.3 [2.20.2] USE="ipv6 pam tcpd -accessibility -afs -branding -debug -dmx -remote (-selinux) -xinerama" 0 kB

Total: 1 package (1 upgrade), Size of downloads: 0 kB

What is "evdev ?
EDIT: I did find out its some sort of generic input driver My desktop is running gdm-2.20.3, gets the same
evdev errors but doesn't load gdm twice. They both use the same drivers (kbd, mouse)
I did find out as mentioned above evdev is not a use flag, it needs to be in INPUT DEVICES minus
the color stuff. Again thanks for the help, I haven't decided if I want to do this yet.

Yeah sorry, you need this line :

Code:

INPUT_DEVICES="kbd keyboard mouse evdev"

And run this command : emerge -uDNv world

And you will reinstall X.ORG with that.

Just post the result :)

d2_racing thanks for the reply, I added evdev to INPUT DEVICES in make.conf. Then did
emerge -uDNv world, and I still have the same failure. Here is /var/log/gdm/:0.log.1, followed
by /var/log/gdm/:0.log
Code:

don don # more /var/log/gdm/:0.log.1

Here it is
Code:

don X11 # more xorg.conf
# XF86Config-4 (XFree86 X Window System server configuration file)
#
# This file was generated by dexconf, the Debian X Configuration tool, using
# values from the debconf database.
#
# Edit this file with caution, and see the XF86Config-4 manual page.
# (Type "man XF86Config-4" at the shell prompt.)
#
# This file is automatically updated on xserver-xfree86 package upgrades *only*
# if it has not been modified since the last upgrade of the xserver-xfree86
# package.
#
# If you have edited this file but would like it to be automatically updated
# again, run the following commands as root:
#
#   cp /etc/X11/XF86Config-4 /etc/X11/XF86Config-4.custom
#   md5sum /etc/X11/XF86Config-4 >/var/lib/xfree86/XF86Config-4.md5sum

Has there been any soution to this question. I have the same problems with GDM restarting twice before it lets me login on the third time. I did add the evdev string to the input devices in make.conf, but emerge does not flag gdm as needing a rebuild.

jmartos, my problem is gone, however I don't know what resolved it. When
I have problems like that I usually just wait, keep upgrading and eventually
they go away. I do an "emerge -uD world" at least once a week on this system
and I don't remember when it started to work, and I'am not using evdev.
tail of Xorg.0.log
Code:

 /var/log $ tail Xorg.0.log
(II) LoadModule: "evdev"
(WW) Warning, couldn't open module evdev
(II) UnloadModule: "evdev"
(EE) Failed to load module "evdev" (module does not exist, 0)
(EE) No input driver matching `evdev'
(II) LoadModule: "evdev"
(WW) Warning, couldn't open module evdev
(II) UnloadModule: "evdev"
(EE) Failed to load module "evdev" (module does not exist, 0)
(EE) No input driver matching `evdev'

Anyhow, good luck.

I finaly fixed the problem. I added the evdev string as mentioned above and forced a rebuild of gdm. I had to force it because the emerge --update --deep --newuse world did not flag gdm as needing to be rebuild. Problem gone after the forced gdm rebuild.

I spoke to soon. The same exact problem returned after a week or so. I have my system all up to date, so I'm stuck. Any other ideas?

If you see your X login screen, your xorg.org is fine and X windows itself are running correctly.

Login then got kickout is more related to window manager (kde, gnome, xfce, etc...) but not x window or driver.

Can you post /var/log/xdm.log and ~/.xsession-error.

@jmartos. I have the same problem - it takes 2 attempts to login using gdm and the nVidia driver. I installed the machine 3 weeks ago. I had the same result implementing the suggestions on this thread. I'm going to see if xdm works.

This seems to have gone away. The only thing I did was re-emerge nvidia-drivers after a kernel update.
