Ok...I attempted to install Gentoo and it apparently did not work properly...
When I start...the kernel starts loading then craps out and says
"Kernel panic, no init found. Try passing init= to the kernel" then it just sits there...
I looked around on google and it said something along the lines of partitioning is wrong?
My hard drives are set up like this:
IDE0/0 - CD-RW
IDE0/1 - CD-Rom
IDE1/0 - Linux drive
IDE1/1 - Windows drive
So, I tried to install Gentoo on IDE1/0 which should be hdc....Afterwards when I get to grub the docs say my root should be (hd2,x) but instead grub tells me the only available drives are hd0 and hd1
I followed the docs twice and messed up both times
After compiling and installing a custom kernel I get a "No init found." error message and a kernel panic....
Anyone know how I can get a working gentoo box and have it dual boot with my Windows drive?
Thanks in advance... _________________ Stupidity, like hydrogen, is one of the basic building blocks of the Universe. |

hdc will only be (hd2) if hda and hdb are hard disks too. In your case, they are cd drives and, as far as grub is concerned, do not even exist. Your so called Linux drive is (hd0) and the Windows drive is (hd1).
I'd highly recommend you swap your hd's, leaving win in (hd0). It will be happier that way. Otherwise, you'll need to use the map funcion (grub manual). _________________ | www.gentoo.org | www.tldp.org | www.google.com | |

Well that was different, how did Windows work B4 trying Gentoo ?
Conventional standards for Win$$ require at least "IOS" on 1 st controller, Primary
Fastest cure, adhereing to standardized convention,
Swap positions of M/board ends of drive cables
Resulting in 1st IDE primary Win$
1st IDE secondary Linux
2nd ide primary CD-RW
2nd ide secondary CD-rom
Grub now sees hd0,0 Win$
hd0,1 Linux

You probably meant
hd0,0 Win
hd1,0 Lin

My " edit" in grub language puts linux as being on same first hard drive,
located after Win$ ??
Now this exemplifies why grub is top rated for misconfiguration.
A to Z self-explanatory, Lilo sub-divides, but close to same idea
Counting Zero as one, turning CD drives invisible ?
