Hi there,
I have just updated my Tibook (2000 dec, gentoo update on jan 16)
I updated the system without X running so when I started it only 1024x768 resol. was accessible - even when I deleted all the Screen entries from xorg.conf. My display is 1152x768.

The screen is awkward... It is 1024x768. I set the background with bsebg (using blackbox) and It appears in a smaller box. xorg.conf was kept unchanged from the previous configuration and there it was fine.
The error message dropped by X at startx is

Quote:
(WW) **** INVALID IO ALLOCATION**** b:0xf0000400 e: 0xf00004ff correcting
(EE) end of block range 0xefffffff < begin 0xf0000000
...
(EE) R128(0): FBIOPUT_VSCREENINFO: Invalid argument
/it comes several times/

Those messages aren't helpful, can you try two things:
1. See if xac produces an xorg.conf that fixes your problem
2. Post the xorg log file somewhere we can see it.

2. More info:
The Xorg log-file is here.
The xorg.conf is here

Quote:

Section "Screen"
Identifier "Default Screen"
Device "ATI Technologies, Inc. Rage Mobility M3 AGP 2x"
Monitor "Laptop Monitor"
Option "Accel"
DefaultDepth 24
SubSection "Display"
Depth 8
Modes "1152x864"
EndSubSection
SubSection "Display"
Depth 15
Modes "1152x768"
EndSubSection
SubSection "Display"
Depth 16
Modes "1152x768"
EndSubSection
SubSection "Display"
Depth 24
Modes "1151x768"
EndSubSection
EndSection

Your mode lines look wrong. It should be 1152x768, 1151 will not work :p It also looks like you have a typo for the 8 bit mode as well.

OK., you are right, it was my last experiment. But I have tried with 1152x768, in any depth, removing the different depth entries, ultimately removing all.
Setting the default depth to something under 10 is not working.
I have copied the xorg.conf file from the other gentoo I have on this machine and working fine at any level.
The result is the same.
I must believe that not the xorg.conf file is corrupt.

Moreover - even console freezes sometimes.
Now I work without X, using 4 ttys, and sometimes one or the other freezes. I can not reconstuct the error.

Any idea? Recompile something with debug?
Use vanilla?

The nasty line was

Quote:
Section "Device"
...
Option "UseFBDev" "true"

It worked with the previous configuration, but now all is fine only when it is set "false".
(Mine is Ati AGP 2x, 8Mb card, driver r128, early Tibook )
