In short: How to configure LILO to use a graphical login?

In more detail: I'm now almost complete happy with my Gentoo box... definitely an improvement over SuSE 7.2. However, I miss one, albeit, minor thing: Under SuSE, when LILO loaded I had the pleasure to view a Tux in what looked liked a 640480 image and a graphical countdown. I currently use LILO version 22.1, and as far as I can determine this version should support such a "graphical login", but I cannot figure out how to configure it. As far as can determine, I need something like

install="/boot/boot-bmp.b"
bitmap="/boot/bitmap"

.. but I can't seem to make this work... do anything now a HOWTO or other docs about this? Or can someone give me a tip? :roll:

Thanks :lol:

honestly, i didnt know lilo could do that. but if you want that kinda customization, why not go with grub? it's just as easy to setup as lilo is.

plus, you can put whatever image you want as the bg and it just looks really snazzy :)

sorry though, cant help ya with lilo :(

there are explicit directions on how to get grub working with gentoo in the installation guide if yer interested.

good luck!

Hey Espen,

It is possible to load animated bootscreens in lilo, note that i´ve never bougthered to mess with it my self. But i´ve seen it work + dug up some pages on the subject:

http://www.gamers.org/~quinet/lilo/
http://www.gamers.org/~quinet/lilo/help.html

This involves getting some helper tool from SUSE but its in a rpm format so you should be able to get it working on gentoo.

Also, this page might also be of interest. He uses a other approach.
http://www.13thfloor.at/Software/lilo-splash/
http://www.13thfloor.at/Software/lilo-splash/Example/

He uses some Gimp and some script-fu tool it seems, any way, it should be possible to find some way that will work for you :D

If it should interest u, it seems like grub can do stuff like this to.
check out:http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&lr=&ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF8&q=grub+xpm

And there even is a little article @ sslug :)
http://www.sslug.dk/linuxbog/friheden/bog/friheden-opstart.html

(jeg skrev på engelsk hvis det andre også skulle være nysgerrige)

Here's another page that might be useful. http://members.lycos.co.uk/datalogide/other/lilo-graphics-mini-howto.html

Thank you guys... it would seem that GRUB is the only way to go, as the required patch doesn't work with either LILO 21.1.75 or 22.1. Since LILO is working now, I hesitate to install another bootloader, at least today :o) I'll post my results once or do make the transition...
