PostPosted: Tue Jan 22, 2008 1:05 am    Post subject: X crashing randomly Reply with quote

I'm pissed off with this for a while. Xorg-server 1.4.0.0 came with lots of bugs for me. First the double clicky mouse one. Now this crash every once in a while. It's annoying.

I'm guess it has something to do with xorg auto add devices (keyboard and mouse) feature. I have a bluetooth keyboard and mouse, and I have the impression that when the connection between the PC and the devices are lost, X crashes. I can't leave the PC alone for some minutes without getting the KDM screen of death.

/var/log/Xorg.0.log doesn't report a thing. That's annoying too. Anything I can do to solve this "mistery"?

Code:

This is a pre-release version of the X server from The X.Org Foundation.
It is not supported in any way.
Bugs may be filed in the bugzilla at http://bugs.freedesktop.org/.
Select the "xorg" product for bugs you find in this release.
Before reporting bugs in pre-release versions please check the
latest version in the X.Org Foundation git repository.
See http://wiki.x.org/wiki/GitPage for git access instructions.

well...

it could be a lot of things.
is 1.4.0 masked? maybe downgrading would help? have you tried?
When did this first happen? What have you been doing? (new hardware, new kernel, emerge world...)

have a look at Linux Stability Guide Part II by Daniel Robbins. Might give you some hints.
Can t say more right now.

lspci,
emerge --info
just to know what is your card.

your make.conf may help too and the drivers you are using for your video card.

but I would point a 1.4 problem unless it s marked as stable...

/var/log/Xorg.0.log doesn't report a thing. That's annoying too. Anything I can do to solve this "mistery"?

Have a look if Xorg.0.log ist there. If X crashed and kdm restarted, it'll create a new Xorg.0.log and copy the old one to Xorg.0.log.old.

How about some info??

System specs etc... ..and
Code:
emerge --info

What happens when you downgrade to 1.3.x

Are you using Compiz?
Are you definitely using nVidia OpenGL?
Code:
eselect list opengl

Cheers,
