Hey All,
I'm looking for a remote so I can flick through music, movies, etc. Does anyone have any suggestions for a rather cheap remote (Under $100) that works really well under Gentoo?
Thanks! |

Any remote should work with Lirc, you might just have to make the config file yourself. Not that hard though. Now if you don't have an IR receiver, then go to www.lirc.org . They've got links to build-it-yourself serial receivers (USB too I think), there are also commercial receivers you can buy if you don't want to make one. |

For information on what's likely to work, see the lirc project website. I personally use the remote that came with my Audigy card (You have to get one with the LiveDrive unit that goes in a cd drive bay to get a remote I believe). |

I use a USB-UIRT (http://www.usbuirt.com/), which is working well for me although I had some trouble that required significant time researching and found I had to patch the kernel for the FTDI driver which was broken for this device around 2.6.20.
But my point is, you might like to get a transceiver device because it enables you to use irrecord, which can be handy if the remote you want to emulate is not common and you can't find a config file for it on the LIRC site or on the net. The LIRC site lists other devices that can receive as well as transmit.
Good luck |

I use an ATI wireless remote (X10 Wireless Technology, Inc. X10 Receiver) that works well with Lirc. However, I'm not sure about the price. I bought two of them, used, for next to nothing. My only complaint is the volume control. It doesn't repeat. Of course, that may have something to do with my configuration. |
