Did the 2007.0 Live{CD,DVD} failed you?

Seeing that the Gentoo Release Engineering TEAM is talking about a 2008.0 beta release in the coming months, I wanted to get some feedback from the community on what aspects of the old 2007.0 release failed you if any. Please be specific, for example if the livecd didn't find a bootable media please specify the chipset and the alternative livecd you used to boot up your system. Also post some details of your system, for example most people had problems with the Jmicron & P35 chipsets that I know of so specify just that also post what packages you *think* the 2008.0 release should include. This is not official and your request will probably not be implemented if any. Eitherway, we can get an idea of what needs to be improved.

I don't remember if it was the live-cd or the universal-cd but when I was booting to X for the graphical install it was incredibly slow on my laptop (I guess it used the via driver and opengl support and my 128mb shared memory didn't really like it). I would propose to load just a vesa driver for X and have no opengl support enabled for those who have lower hardware.

Also there should be the rt2500 network-driver included.

Worked like a charm here. I was actually glad I got to recompile major stuff like glibc and gcc early on. Although I did use update from the beginning, so linux-headers/glibc didn't get upgraded til my kernel was installed, and expat was handled automagically.

I know that there a lot of people that had a new release of the Jmicron chipset and they had to use SystemRescueCD or the latest version of Knoppix to be able to boot theses box.

But for a concern, everything was fine

The LiveCD failed for me because X tried to load a video driver that didn't exist on the CD (ati) and I had to manually edit xorg.conf to fall-back to the vesa driver. I think xorg-server-1.4 fixes this by falling back automatically, but then it isn't stable yet.

The only other problem for me was the non-inclusion of the rt2500/rt2x00 wireless driver which makes testing the LiveCD or installing from it very difficult. I can understand, however, why out-of-tree drivers aren't included, but on the other hand it is in portage. This should not be an issue in the future as the driver is included in kernel 2.6.24 (very unlikely that this kernel will be used for Gentoo 2008.0, however).

I never had a failure with minimal cd, but lately I use systemrescue cd mainly because it have mc

I also use mc in X... So, can we have mc on live cd?

Hmm... no? I never got the chance to use the new LiveCD. I know that Gentoo 1.4 LiveCD works fine though.

No problems here. I had full hardware detection,networking,video. The only problem which is not really problem at all is, I run duel heads
and get clone mode in the cd, which is completely understandable and more than acceptable.

My computer hardware list:
ABIT uGURU AV8-3rd Eye motherboard-VIA K8T800 Pro/VT8237 chipset
VIA Velocity Ethernet
AMD64 4000+
2 gigs of OCZ gold edition dual channel ram
Nvidia Geforce 7600 GT / AGP
1 SATA WD Raptor drive
1 WD Caviar drive

If I remember correctly the AMD64 live cd had the same results.

Failed. I guess it was the P35. SystemRescueCD worked fine, so I guess it was the kernel.

oh crap... i voted no, but that was because the 2007.0 i686 and x86_64 livecds works fine on my corresponding PCs. However, the (beta?) 2007.0 ia64 livecd however does not work on my ia64 server. :-(

I am one of those who had a problem with the JMicron & P35 chipsets. I got around it with the small-gentoo release from kernelOfTruth.

I'm a fan of the LiveDVD with all packages on it -- it makes it easy to get a bootable system fast, then I can start a long single emerge and let it run all night. Looking forward to the next release ...

i bought a new computer with the Jmicron controler so i failed to install gentoo with the live cd.

It has nice menu-driven console-only install tools but no console-only boot option that I could discern. This made using said tools, which obviously had a lot of time and effort invested in them, a real pain.

I still was too lazy to download it.
Minimal install is good enough.

But main idea behind live cd is interesting. it may attract more new users to Gentoo.
