I just installed the ppc64 stage 4 on my ps3. I then tried to emerge vlc but got the message that ppc64 was masking the package.

Would it work with 32bit ppc ?

Or am I completely off the mark ?

vlc is not marked "stable" on ppc64, it's in "testing".

Yes, vlc is marked stable on ppc.

As you do not seem to have worked with portage, I suggest you read the "Working with Gentoo" part of the Gentoo Handbook.

There is a reason why vlc is not being marked "stable".. It is not stable... But if you still want to have it (and vlc didn't crashed for a long time here, so I might mark it stable in the near future) then you need to "unmask" media-video/vlc. To do so follow this steps:

1. try opening /etc/portage/package.keywords

2. this file shouldn't exist on a new system, so create it

3. place this line in the file:

Code:
media-video/vlc

4. if all dependencies of vlc are already stable then you can install vlc now:

Code:
$ emerge vlc -av

5. if the emerge command still sais some package is masked follow steps 1-4 again with the other masked package.
