PostPosted: Thu Jan 24, 2008 11:07 pm    Post subject: segfault Problem [solved] Reply with quote

After upgrading some packages, i cannot open X anymore.

gnome-session[6382]: segfault at 0000000000000000 rip 00002ae22abb932a rsp 00007fff84389170 error 6
gnome-session[6575]: segfault at 0000000000000000 rip 00002ac031de332a rsp 00007fff7d15f720 error 6

i am wondering if packages or USE (non-hardware problem) whatever, could cause segfault Problem?

i upgraded packages, at that time i was on Fluxbox, suddenly i cannot open any gtk apps, most apps cannot work, so i logged off fluxbox, and wanted to try gnome, then i found i cannot open any X any more.
i dont use gdm at all, normally i use command "startx" to open fluxbox or GNOME.
i did revdep-rebuild, remerged Gtk, but useless
could someone point some clues?

thanks a lot for any suggestion

Does X segfault out too? if not might want to take a look at Xorg.0.log and see what it says. Do you remember at all what packages you updated? If you have a slight idea take a look at emerge.log. You might want to take a look at emerge.log anyways and it might jog your memory.

cheers

Ive got the same issue and cannot track it down.

This was a big upgrade for me (hadn't done one in a month). First thing I did was rebuild my kernel, then did my 20 package puDN world, followed by revdep-rebuild -X (which rebuilt a bunch of gnome pilot libs). Then, I rebuilt ndiswrapper, hal, and acpi-utils. Eventually I even rebuilt metacity and dbus during my debugging.

Here is what I am dealing with:

dmesg
Code:

ndiswrapper: using IRQ 5
wlan0: ethernet device 00:90:4b:7d:e4:f0 using NDIS driver: bcmwl5, version: 0x40a280b, NDIS version: 0x501, vendor: 'NDIS Network Adapter', 14E4:4320.5.conf
wlan0: encryption modes supported: WEP; TKIP with WPA, WPA2, WPA2PSK; AES/CCMP with WPA, WPA2, WPA2PSK
usbcore: registered new interface driver ndiswrapper
kjournald starting.  Commit interval 5 seconds
EXT3 FS on hda4, internal journal
EXT3-fs: mounted filesystem with ordered data mode.
Adding 1052248k swap on /dev/hda2.  Priority:-1 extents:1 across:1052248k

And I forgot to mention I am masking my i810 drivers to force them to 1.7.4 since anything newer hangs my entire system.

RazielFMX. i have solved my problem.
if you can check these two package have been updated?

app-admin/eselect-fontconfig-1.0
media-libs/fontconfig-2.5.0-r1

use this command to check what have u updated

genlop -l --date 1 day ago ( or ur updated date)
genlop -l --date 2 days ago

if yes, then u can try this command see whats going to happen,
fc-cache -fv
if you get an error something like this
/usr/share/fonts/xxxfont: segmentation fault
that means u got the problem from that font folder.

i got this error due to i have a customized font folder, contained some microsoft fonts.
as i mentioned i found this clue :
/usr/share/fonts/xxxfont: segmentation fault

so just remove "xxxfont folder" or move all your font to another font folder(/usr/share/font/xxx), then your X will come back....

hope this helps...;)

I resolved the issue in a totally different way... Rolling back a bunch of updates. I had unmasked alot of things to support a newer version of banshee... Rolling back to the stable version of banshee resolved the segfault.

Commented lines from my /etc/portage/package.keywords...

Code:

##Banshee Install
#media-sound/banshee ~x86
#media-plugins/gst-plugins-faac ~x86
#media-plugins/gst-plugins-faad ~x86
#media-libs/gstreamer ~x86
#media-libs/gst-plugins-base ~x86
#dev-dotnet/ipod-sharp ~x86
#media-libs/libipoddevice ~x86
#sys-apps/sg3_utils ~x86
#sys-apps/rescan-scsi-bus ~x86
#media-plugins/gst-plugins-taglib ~x86
#dev-dotnet/taglib-sharp ~x86
#dev-dotnet/dbus-glib-sharp ~x86
#dev-dotnet/dbus-sharp ~x86
#dev-dotnet/podsleuth ~x86

Not sure what in here broke things, but this fixed it.

I do still have one issue, NetworkManager still will not start, nor will it rebuild. I will be posting a separate thread for that issue.

NOTE: There was a font change, but the cache command worked like a charm (only corefonts changed).

I had a simmilar problem, and downgrading media-libs/gstreamer , media-libs/gst-plugins-bad , media-libs/gst-plugins-base back to stable fixed the problem.

Well, I think I found the issue with networkmanager. I will know as soon as my recompiles complete. Apparently libnl was rolled back in portage to 1.0_pre6 from 1.1. I had updated to 1.1 last night as part of my uDN world. I am rebuilding libnl with the new downgraded version and rebuilding networkmanager, networkmanager-vpnc, and nm-applet. I'll let you know if it works.

EDIT: Yup, that fixed it. I am now fully operational again. Kind of regret blowing out all my gnome related dirs in my home dir as part of my debugging last night. Oh well, c'est la vie.
