I've recently developed the problem where my computer no longer completely shuts down. Instead my computer just hangs at....

Remounting remaining filesystems readonly
System halt
System halt

Not sure of the cause I've search google and the forums and though there have been other instances of halt issues none seems to be the same as what I'm experiencing. So if you know how to fix this or have a good guess or two let me know.

Oh, I should note this happens where it is using the kde or shutdown -h now from the commandline.

I'm guessing that the problem started after you upgraded to a kernel newer than 2.6.20. I can't find it right now, but there was an open bug on the kernel bugzillia about changes made to ACPI in 2.6.21 causing a lot of machines to hang at poweroff. Mine is one of them. As annoying as it is, I just hold the power button until the system turns off after the shutdown stalls. In my case, I can see all the keyboard LEDs flash when it tries to poweroff, but then it just hangs. Since all the filesystems are either unmounted, or read only at that point, it doesn't hurt anything.

If you ever do find a solution, I would very much like to know what it is.

So you not tried upgrading to says kernel 2.6.23 or downgrading?

I'm running the current stable x86 gentoo-sources. gentoo-sources-2.6.23-r6

Downgrading works, but my system glibc and every thing else, is built against 2.6.23 kernel headers. Plus, I would have to drop back to 2.6.19-r5 as 2.6.20 is masked. I saw that there were some ACPI fixes in the changelog for the new 2.6.24 kernel, so I'm hopeful that they are making progress towards fixing the issue. Since most of the main kernel devs are off to Australia next week, I planned on waiting until 2.6.24-r1 before I try it out.

Fixed this issue by choosing the optimal setting in my Tyan Tiger K8W s2875 mobo.
