|
|
I have been trying to compile glibc 2.3.1-r4 several times on my Powerbook 3400, and each time it has failed with a different error. The last two times I have tried to compile it, it failed with a kernel oops, and another strange error:
Code: | INIT: PANIC: Segmentation violation! Sleeping for 30 seconds. |
I have tried with different CFLAGS/CXXFLAGS, for example the last time I compiled with CFLAGS="-O2 -pipe -fsigned-char". I have enough free space on my harddrive, 80MB ram and 160MB swap.
So I was wondering if there is a fix or if there is a binary ebuild out there somewhere? _________________ Kind regards, enrique

Have you tried it with very conservative flags? (i.e. default)
Not that you would want to leave it that way, just to localize the problem. Set the cpu and -O3 and see what happens. (I've never heard of glibc not compiling with -O3).
Is your cup overclocked? Could you have a heat problem? |

Yes, I have tried very conservative flags. My CPU is not overclocked, and I don't belive that my PB has a heat problem, it does not get any hotter running for 12 hours compiling glibc, than by normal use. _________________ Kind regards, enrique

That may not be your problem, but actually, your cpu does get hotter compiling code for 12 hours than idling. Considerably hotter. The heat generated in an ASIC is a function of the number of gates switching state. |

OK, let's say heat is the my PB's problem, how do I compile glibc then? I can't cool the cpu, as it is a laptop, I have tried to raise it above the table, so that air can cool the underside, but that did not help either. So what to do now? Should I just wait for 1.4 final with grps packages for ppc? _________________ Kind regards, enrique

I wish I could tell you. I don't know that heat is your problem. Its just that from the symptoms you describe, it does not sound like a software issue. It sounds like hardware. Software almost invariably gives exactly replicable symptoms to the same initial conditions, and you say that you get a different error every time. You could have a flaky memory dimm, a bad cpu or something else, but it sounds like hardware to me. I have never had a heat problem, but I've read about many people who have on this forum, that's why I asked. If its a standard laptop, its probably not an issue unless you live in a real hot climate (which Denmark is not).
Sorry I can't help. |
