Hey guys, I have the weirdest issue.
After running my box for a few hours, my entire internet connection slows down for a few specific pages, but the rest usually works normally. Its is always the google/youtube/flickr area that just dies. gmail is gone too, so kmail doesnt get my mail anymore. but it doesnt die with an error, it just doesnt find new mails. same with the pages, they dont crash, they time out...
I have switched from using my router/isp as a dns server, and am now using opendns.com. this helped in that, i can ping google, get the ip, and load that page. works fine that way, but google.com doesnt. a reboot helps every time, so i dont know whats wrong. also, my gentoo laptop can get on google normally, even when my desktop cant, and even when its resolv.conf is messed up (still the settings from college network). I just dont get it...
and ideas? |

If this were on windows, my first guess would be some kind of malware messing with dns/tcp connections, but this is gentoo we're talking here...
Well, first, I would try to isolate what actual step is failing - not getting DNS reply (doesn't seem to be this), tcp connection not becoming established (can check this with netstat), no data being transferred over TCP (you might want to use another machine to sniff the network and find out which side is failing to communicate)
I dunno, seems like a really strange problem |

How are you connected to the internet? DSL, T1, ppp, that could help to isolate the problem. |

My connection is over a cable modem.
for the dns:
when i used my isp server, i got an ip back that didnt work out, even when i put the ip into firefox directly.
when i used opendns, i got an ip that worked, but typing google.com didnt
(i used ping www.google.com to get the ip address) |
