Hi

I have had regular freeze on my computer for the last year. Sometimes it happens often and sometimes it can stay up for a whole day. I have changed the kernel several times and it doesn't really get any better or worse . Tested at least 2.6.20, 21, 23 and now up to 2.6.24

First I suspected memory HW problem but I have run MMtest several times for 12h and it comes down to nothing.

Each time the crash occurs some of the lamps on the keyboard flashes, cant really remember if it is caps-lock and numlock but I think so. What does that mean?

No sysreq-key combination is possible to run, even to reboot is impossible, since there is no action. The kernel seems to be completely dead. Can I enable any traces? What is the best approach to debug this kind of problem?

Any suggestions is appreciated.

If the keyboard lights are flashing, that' a kernel panic. It can mean that there's a hardware problem (like a harddrive or memory) or a driver conflict or even a program that's doing something bad.

If you're sure it's not memory and you've had smart-mon-tools or something ensure your drive is good then go through your kernel config and make sure you're not loading drivers you don't need and loading all the ones you do.

There can be lots of reasons for it.

The best thing to do, if it happens regularly is leave your machine showing the text console and see if you can catch the error.

I just had another crash, this time the HD-LED was glowing (fixed light) and everything froze. The keyboard LEDs didn't blink.

I will go through the kernel once more.
