this has bee a long time problem with several past versions of xine-lib an not one update has been made that would fix this. since i can't find any info about similar problems so i figure it may be an individual issue.
lets start with some info about an example problem file
the default content of said file are h264 encoded and has a vorbis audio soft subtitles in mkv format
with the current xine-lib version any video with vorbis audio has no sound at all. strange enough i extract the audio track with mkvextract and open it in xine it plays fine 
next i use mencoder to reencode the video to mpeg format and merge the new video with the old audio into a new mkv file well guess what? still no sound! all i get from command line is this

from what i can tell nothing looks awry in the audio department but who am i to say.
next i re encoded the audio from vorbis to mp3 via ogg2mp3 (mencoder doesn't work for this) an merge me another new mkv using the new audio and the above mentioned mpeg encoded video. well the good news is this works great perfect AV sync and everything.
for the record the entire vorbis auido problem appeared in the newest xine-lib version not like in the previous version where it had the audio skip problem below
next is where i found a problem with having h264 video with the audio skipping.
the next mkv file i merged contained the orginal h264 video from the file and the above mention mp3 encoded audio file.
simply put having h264 video for some reason cause a momentary pause/skip in the audio of a file

because i like xine better and kaffeine doesn't support mplayer. and yes i have tried kmplayer but its playlist functions suck.

Well, after trying to help you with this post, I discovered that I can't play matroska-wrapped ogg soundtracks in Xine either.
It sounds like there's a known bug with how xine handles ogg files: bug 18.
Couldn't figure out how to solve it myself, so I'm just commiserating here. Please post if you find out any more information.

i read the link you posted and they reported it on version 1.1.8. this is a version where ogg and others would skip.
also i found out that xine has different levels of verbosity the highest i saw is 5 and neither man page or help states anything about how many levels there are.
i am going to up date my first post with the new info from xine maybe it can help more.

Since when? I seem to remember that I used kaffeine with mplayer as backend engine...
Either way, I would suggest SMplayer as frontend.

i thank you for your suggestion on smplayer right now i use kplayer. i wish kaffeine did use mplayer though.
at any using mplayer will allow me to watch the videos no problem but i still want to try and fix this problem if at all possible.
EDIT: got some update on things.
i may have found the problem with the no sound with vorbis issue. it appears to have something to do with how xine handles matroska files. i took a copy of the orginal vorbis audio and merged it into a ogm file with re-encoded video and i got audio. i also have some new files that have vorbis audio in ogm format that play fine and thats what led me onto this.
this pins down where the vorbis problem lies. but i still have the audio skipping problem with the h264 encodes.
any new ideas?
