Well, I have an A4-ish scanner, and an A3 document. I've scanned the A3 as two overlapping A4 pages, and need to merge them into one single file. Now, there used to be software to automatically do this in the old days of logitech hand scanners (the ones which you had to walk down the page by hand and produce images in strips), and they worked quite well, so the algorithm certainly exists:
Question: Is there any software in the gentoo database which will do this automatic image alignment and stitching together? GIMP doesn't seem to be able to manage the task and I'm not about to emerge a dozen different applications to see if any of them will, and then have to try and tidy up afterwards... _________________ Matt.

I can only suggest you to use GIMP for this work and do the stich by yourself.
on http://gug.sunsite.dk (the Gimp User Group) u can find a nice tutorial on how to do a right "merge" of scanned images _________________ Gentoo user since 2004.
