I've followed the gentoo kde 4.0 guide and I'm wondering if kde4 will remove kde 3.5.7 that I have currently installed by running emerge -avD kde-base/kdebase-startkde:kde-4 because I wish to remove 3.5.7. :D

If you see a [U] with -av or -pv then the old version of KDE should be removed. If you see [N] or [NS] then it won't.

No it won't, kde is slotted so 3.4 3.5 4.0 will all be installed in their own folders. You will have to remove any 3.5 packages yourself.
You can list them with 'equery list kde|grep 3.5.' though.

i notice if i emerge -auvD world it will show packages like
[ebuild NS ] kde-base/kdebase-startkde-4.0.0 0 k
[ebuild NS ] kde-base/kcontrol-4.0.0
[ebuild NS ] kde-base/konqueror-4.0.0 USE="-debug -htmlhandbook" 0 kB

Does that mean konqueror-3.5.7, kcontrol-3.5.7 and kdebase-startkde-3.5.7 will remain on my system since they are not updated?
