Since attempting "emerge --update --deep --newuse world" I have been unable to start kde. The update ended when it was unable to emerge package x11-libs/libXpm. The next time I rebooted, i got the nvidia splash screen as usual, but instead of the kde login, I then got a black screen with an X type dialog saying it couldn't start kdeinit.
I tried unmerging kde to see if I could start x without it, but now when I run startx I get the nvidia splash screen, then am kicked back to the command prompt without anything that resembled an error message.
Any Ideas?

The package was libXpm. (I actually updated my original post to include this) I am not sure how to continue the update or what etc-update/dipatch-conf does. I have tried "revdep-rebuild -X --library libxpm" to no effect.
