I'm going to buy a new motherboard very soon and I'd like to know the status of different chipsets supporting AthlonXP cpus in linux. I heard the nforce2 chipset rocks in windows, but how is it under linux? Heard a few bad things about it :?

Jevin,

Iv'e just got a Asus A7N8X Delux and it all seems to work for me. I'm not using the SATA yet.

I heard bad things about the nForce2 with integrated graphics because it uses shared memory, which causes grub problems.

If you are an OS purest, you won't like it. The network driver is binary only but the sound is Intel based.

I've been running an nforce2 board under Gentoo for months now without problems. It took me a bit to get everything working (which seems to be the case with nearly any hardware), but now its working great!

Good luck, and have fun!

Hi.

May I ask you if you used the LiveCD 1.4 final and IGP graphics by any chance?

I am also using a nforce2 board (Shuttle MN31N Athlon XP 2400+ 256MB 333 RAM). Have you been able to boot the LiveCD 1.4 final right into framebuffer with the onboard graphics???

The previous LiveCD's (rc2,3,4) all stopped while booting complaining about some unrecognited video mode, just like the final one does for me

I have no idea how to get framebuffer up and running...

freaking onboard stuff

cheers

The framebuffer is broken as far as I know. Just use the "nofb" option to get the LiveCD to boot.

Don't plan on using the on-board soundcard though.

The drivers don't support hardware mixing, meaning you can only have 1 audio source at a time...which is REALLY annoying!
