queen,

I'm not sure I follow completely.

With only a /dev/snd/controlC1, your normal sound card works, which you tested with a headset with a 3.5mm jack fitted ?
What sound modules show in lsmod if you repeat theis test ?

When I put the 3.5mm headset I pulled out the usb headset and I removed the snd-usb-audio and modprobe snd-hda-intel. This setup worked. I think it showed /dev/snd/controlC0 but I don't remember because I am not near the pc now.

With usb headset I removed snd-hda-intel and added snd-usb-audio. It didn't work. I don't want to say anything about /dev/snd, because I might be wrong.

queen,

What this tells is that regardless of which control file you had in /dev/snd is that snd-intel-hda works, and thats the hard one to make work.
Thats good.

With both modules loaded, it can be difficult to test whichever becomes the second device (sound card 1) because applications default to sound card 0. You will need to reconfigure one of your players to cope.

That's simple. I disable the usb headset from /etc/modules-autoload.d/kernel-2.6.

I had the indication from the laptop that snd-intel-hda works.

queen,

Thats the same as starting only one sound card. The difficulty comes when you want to use them both together but for different applications.
e.g. the on board card for music and the headset for VoIP.

I see. I wanted to use the headset for voip. Music wasn't included because it's at workplace. So, I tried to use the usb headset because it was in front of the pc. To use the 3.5'' jack was a little bit difficult because it's on the back of the PC, but in the managed. Besides, the pc has soundcard but no speakers.

I found now a link how to use the 2nd audio device, in case I will need in the future.

Hope it's the correct one:
http://alsa.opensrc.org/index.php/DigitalOut#Separate_Playback_Device where they mention to use
Code:
mplayer file.wav -ao alsa:device=hw=0,0
and if I want to change I use 0,1 or 0,2 for hw.

Anyway, your suggestion to make snd-hda-intel as module was a key factor in this case.
