Some of you may have seen the line of storms in the midwest - one of them knocked out my power long enough to shut my computer down - HARD.

Ever since, when I try to start X, the video switches modes, I see a mouse cursor on a solid black background, then the system freezes. My config has not changed; I tried disabling compiz from starting up over kde, that didn't work. If I try starting X as root (not starting kde), I get a solid black screen with no cursor and again a system freeze.

I tried doing a 'emerge -ke world' from my compiled packages, that didn't help. I am still able to log in through ssh to check the X log, here's the tail end where it seems to be freezing:

Now, about five minutes later, I see the cursor on the screen but can't move it, and I can't do ssh anymore. Looks like a complete system freeze.
Everything but X seems to work quite well; any suggestions?

EDIT - waiting for a long time shows some progression of X startup. I was able to log back in to ssh and see that X was running at 100% CPU, 40 minutes into the process. The mouse moves extremely slowly but I can't seem to do anything with it.

I would try a live cd to see if that works. (I always keep a knoppix cd around for this kind of thing, but many livecd's are similar.)
Preferably one that uses X and has a desktop.
I would try and run the livecd hard, copying files, running applications like maybe openoffice, things that would stress the processor and use memory.
If your box does all this without hiccup, it would tend to rule out a hardware problem.

If you encounter similar problems, you may have hardware damage.

In either case, it may be wise to at least run a cursory memcheck off a livecd.

If you don't have hardware issues, it may be disk corruption. You could run the standard utilities for your file system to check integrity.

Anyway, these are the first things I would do.

Well, knoppix works great, runs fast and smooth. In running xfs_check, I found that several inodes needed to be repaired, so I ran xfs_repair on those partitions.

As far as X goes on my gentoo install though, nothing has changed. If I leave it running for a long while, some things start to happen, such as the mouse changing from an X to an arrow, and one of the KDE splash messages came up after a while, and there is intermittent HD activity. After a long while, X stops running and I get this in the log:

Code:

Backtrace:
0: X(xf86SigHandler+0x6d) [0x48123e]
1: /lib/libc.so.6 [0x2b92bb721680]

Fatal server error:
Caught signal 11.  Server aborting

I did run memtest86 from grub to see if it was a RAM problem; when it went through test 6, it found a single bit wrong. I hardly think that would be the cause. I will try running the computer on each stick to see if it really is that simple, but I doubt it.

In the meantime, any other suggestions are appreciated, since it doesn't seem to be a hardware issue.

Next thing I would try is
Code:
revdep-rebuild

It may not be the memory causing this problem, but any memory error is a cause of concern to me.
Although, I never gotten just one, either there were lots, or none.

Turns out, my video card must have been damaged by the power spike. Thanks for all the suggestions though!
