|

Hey all
I just setup my kernel (gentoo-sources-2.4.20-r5) to use the bootsplash images and it works perfectly. But I needed to remerge alsa-driver to get sound working again with my new kernel.
After remerging the drivers I tried to unmute the channels as per the alsa guide and got the following errors.
Code: | root@saturn /home/andrew # amixer set Master 100 unmute
amixer: Unknown playback setup 'unmute'..
root@saturn /home/andrew # amixer set PCM 100 unmute
Simple mixer control 'PCM',0
Capabilities: pvolume pswitch pswitch-joined cswitch
Playback channels: Front Left - Front Right
Capture channels: Front Left - Front Right
Limits: Playback 0 - 31
Front Left: Playback 31 [100%] [on] Capture [off]
Front Right: Playback 31 [100%] [on] Capture [off]

After asking on #gentoo I was suggested to do the following
Code: | root@saturn /home/andrew # amixer set Master 100
Simple mixer control 'Master',0
Capabilities: pvolume
Playback channels: Front Left - Front Right
Limits: Playback 0 - 31
Front Left: Playback 31 [100%]
Front Right: Playback 31 [100%]

As you can see this works...
But now I do not hear any sound when I play something wether I use aplay, xmms, mplayer or just cat a wave file to /dev/dsp (and all links). This is really annoying because nothing except initrd support was changed in the kernel but it seems to have stripped my alsa driver (cmipci) from all of its controls.
Yes the unmute Master command worked before. Sound worked before.
I have tried several different alsa versions, tried completely removing alsa and /etc/modules.d/alsa and then stepping through the alsa guide line by line, but after all of that it still does not work.
My sound card is a Multimedia audio controller: C-Media Electronics Inc CM8738 (rev 10) as listed by lspci and yes sound has been working flawlessly with alsa since I first installed Gentoo on this machine.
Anyone got any ideas? |

You might try running alsamixer or alsamixergui to try to get a visual of what is going on. |

Using alsamixer simply shows all the channels set to 100% I will try alsamixergui when I get home. |

I am also having this problem. The other utilities only show the status and is not able to mute/unmute. I get this error no matter what I do. |

I too, have this problem. I can hear sound, but not from the back speakers. In alsamixer the surround bar has a line over it. |

you might try to unmute the duplicate front speakers option depending on your sound card _________________ http://www.whatsinyourbox.org -- Technology discussion, news, and more. |
