I already have KDE and Gnome...right now my laptop is chugging away merrily installing XFCE4....

What do you do after installation though? I am a complete newbie to XFCE4...these are the questions I want to get answered:

1. How to start KDE programs like KDevelop, KOrganizer, KMail via XFCE4?
2. How to start Gnome programs like GPhoto, Gimp via XFCE4?
3. Can I use Karamba in XFCE4?
4. HOWTO configure GDM to let me boot into XFCE4?
5. Is there a startup script that you need to run to get XFCE4 functioning properly after installation?

Thanks! :D

GDM seemed to grab whatever I had and added it to its session list.
i have gnome xfce4 and flux and everything showed up on its own.
xfce4 has a launcher panel that you can add things to, its a lot easier than launching everything from a terminal. it also has a left-click-on-the-desktop root menu that has to be edited by hand. i can't remember where it hides.

I'm pretty sure you have to manually add launch icons to the launcher bar.

Not as far as I know - it relies on kde-core. You may as well be running KDE if you need Karamba - you should be able to disable the kde-panel and kwin (the window manager) and replace them with those of XFCE4 if you want a setup flexible around Karamba.

It should have been done automatically.

No, it should run fine from GDM.

The left click on desktop background menu file is '/etc/xfce4/menu.xml'
To configure it copy it to your '~/.xfce4' directory and edit it manually.

You can also change your ~/.xinitrc to look like this:

Code:

xfce-mcs-manager
xfwm4 --daemon
xftaskbar4 &
xfdesktop &
exec xfce4-panel

I'm don't think that'd be a problem. If it's installed, all it does is update the desktop background, If I understand correctly.

If not, replacing xfdesktop with KDesktop(? name? not sure) should fix it up for him.

or even more easily: exec startxfce4

I use XFCE4 through GDM and I'd like to start up certain X apps (xmodmap, gaim, xscreensaver, etc) after the X server is running. Where/how should I script these to start properly? I've tried the Session file and it didn't seem to stick. In the past I've used WM specific options/scripts but I don't see any for XFCE.

Before the startxfce4 or after? Do I need to run them backgrounded (&) or does it matter?

I'd prefer not to do any changes on the startx-relevant (.xsession/.xinitrc) files so I don't lose my default rc.conf wm with that.

Thanks
