After doing an emerge -Du world a few weeks ago, I've noticed that my computer has started having problems that look kernel-related when emerging several things at once. For example, I recently started updating to KDE 3.5.8, which is a pretty lengthy process. After getting done with several ebuilds, my computer would just seem to freeze up completely. I would also come back after leaving it going for a while and find that it had just turned itself off. This happened several times pretty consistently -- all while trying to emerge. I finally decided that I should try emerging on the console rather than from within X, and got a bunch of stuff followed by this message:

"Fixing recursive fault but reboot is needed"

There was some other information which looked like kernel function names and memory addresses. I've been searching around for information regarding this error and most places seem to say that it's probably a driver issue. I don't know what to look at from here, though. I would be happy to provide any more information if necessary and would greatly appreciate any suggestions on how to fix the problem.

Edit: I should probably also note that I'm using gentoo-sources and running the following kernel: 2.6.23-gentoo-r6

I don't know about kernel bugs per se, but it sounds like you may be having some overheating issues. If you do that and you still have some semblance of a userland left, you should try to copy the output of dmesg so we can see exactly what it's reporting.

It just seems strange to me that this would start all of a sudden if it's an overheating issue. I suppose it's possible, though.

I don't think there's any way for me to copy the output of dmesg after it's happened, though. I can't do anything once that message appears as far as I can tell. One other thing I wrote down about it is that on one of the final lines it said something like:

RIP (some address) free_hot_cold_page

Not sure if that helps.
