ALSA issues, VIA, and headphones

Using the detected hda-intel-snd driver (from alsaconf) I am able to play audio from my speaker on my VA2001T laptop, however when I plug my headphones into the headphone jack the speaker mutes and the headphones don't output anything.

I've tried to change the modes of the driver and nothing works

I have alsa compiled as a module as well.

Under the mixer I have: headphone, speaker, and capture. My hardware has a speaker, mic and headphone jack.

The headphone and speaker volumes control the speaker.

I wonder if this is related to my issue posted here, also involving a VIA82xx, which has not yet been resolved. I still get output but the bass is severely attenuated. Do you get any sound at all (say, turn the volume up to max with the phones in)?

Maybe alsa 1.0.16 solves your problem. I don't know why it's not in the official portage tree yet.
