what device/protocol settings should i use for a logitech 3 button (no wheel) on com1? i cant work it out, and should i use /dev/mouse, /dev/logimouse or /dev/ttyS01? _________________ 95% of all computer errors occur between chair and keyboard (TM)

It shouldn't matter that you have a logitech mouse or anything, only that it has a third button (I think). You can use a generic device. For a PS/2 mouse, use /dev/psaux (/dev/misc/psaux if you have devfs). There should be some options in (one of) the InputDevice section(s) of your /etc/X11/XF86Config file.
Also, have you tried the xf86config program as in the Gentoo Desktop Configuration Guide? Like the doc says, you might hafta run it several times, but you should eventually get it to work.
For an fairly in-depth tutorial on configuring XFree86, see this tutorial. (Free registration required, but, IMO, it's worth it.)
If all else fails, ensure ps/2 support (assuming a ps/2 mouse, of course) is enabled in your kernel.
Oh, and if you have a USB mouse, uh, find an adapter. I tried for the longest time, but I never could get my MS Intellimouse to work with USB. O'course, I am a n00b...
