Hi all,

I just finished with a gentoo install on my laptop. I emerged kde3.5 and xfce4. Both run fine.
The problem appears when switching between consoles.

From GUI, I enter CTRL+ALT+F1 .... F6 .......... I can get into all consoles
But when I enter CTRL+ALT+F7 to get back to GUI, my machine halts and I have to do a hard reboot.

I tried some search queries but could not figure out 'what exactly' to search.

regards

What driver are you using for xorg (and the framebuffer, if any)?

I presume using the alt + cursor keys locks it up when switching to the vt Xorg is running on as well?

you were right hopeless ... here is what i found on the forums:

Quote:
For any kernel do NOT enable the following options or else you risk bootsplash not working or framebuffer corruption when switching VTs.
Code:
Device Drivers  --->
    Graphics support  --->
            < >   nVidia Riva support  (do not enable!)
        Logo configuration  --->
            [ ] Bootup logo  (do not enable!)

I disabled Bootup logo and did a kernel recompile. There are some 'other not related to this topic' errors but at least the computer has stopped freezing now.
