/rant on
Every freaking search I do for gentoo lands me on an Ubuntu forum page. It's not a coincidence.

WTF.

I think they are buying gentoo [everything] keyword phrases on google or something.

Bastards...
/rant off

Linux is a Kernel, GNU software and others comprise your user level software, and the Ubuntu distro utilizes the Gentoo framework. Because Ubuntu appeals to so many people you will see a lot more posts when searching for solutions.

Just out of curiousity I ran a few test queries, and well, I can't confirm your observations. But then I've probably not used the exact same keywords as you.

That's funny, everytime I search for a guide on how to do something in linux, a gentoo doc/wiki page is among the top hits.

Yes I agree... We should all switch to MSN

Seriously though, I guess it depends on what you are searching for. When researchign specific Linux issues I usually find most of the hits come from either gentoo or Ubuntu. Can you give an example of a search for gentoo where all the hits are from Ubuntu?

Uh, what? I'm pretty damn sure that Ubuntu does *not* use the Gentoo framework -- it's actually a derivative of Debian (hence why it has apt-get, but not portage). Wikipedia agrees with me: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ubuntu_%28Linux_distribution%29

I totaly missed that before. Yeah, Gentoo is a core distro. By that I mean that it was created from scratch, not built off another distro. There may be other core distro's but the one's I am aware of are (in no particular order) Debian, Slackware, Redhat, and Gentoo.

One thing to note is that the order of keywords in a Google search is very important, e.g. the first keyword is more relevant than the second, and so on. So using "Gentoo" as the first keyword rather than the last will almost certainly give you more Gentoo related results.

Thank you! I'm glad I'm not the only one finding this glaring error!

I think it'd be fair to call Yoper a core distro in addition to Debian, Slackware (oldest surviving), Redhat and Gentoo. Yoper isn't really directly based off any of these guys, but does use Knoppix hardware detection tools (Knoppix being a descendant of Debian). CRUX is also a notable core distro because of it's direct descendant, Arch Linux (at least, notable in my book). Of course, Linux From Scratch is in an entirely different realm. I think, of all the core distros, Debian has the most descendants today, although Red Hat has quite a few.

Here's the timeline: http://futurist.se/gldt/gldt76.png
