Hi,
I've been having a real hard time trying to get my ethernet interface running and I'm thinking it's the device itself.
I have a new Gigabyte GA-73PVM-S2H motherboard for a quad-core, and am trying to install from a minimal cd the latest gentoo. I've set up my NIC which seems like hundreds of times, but I don't know why this one is being a problem.
I've got my interface configured (ip, mask, gateway), and it starts fine, but I can't ping my router. The lights are on on my router interface as well as the ethernet on the motherboard.
$ lspci | grep net
00:0f.0 Ethernet controller: nVidia Corporation Unknown device 07dc (rev a2)
Other sites I've read said this is a Realtec 8211B chip. I've been booting from the 'gentoo' kernel from the livecd and I think the nvidia driver "forcedeth" was loaded, but that doesn't seem to be working. Anyone know what the correct driver is or what I should be doing?
Any help much appreciated. |

The kernel on the gentoo live cd is quite old and might have problems with newer chipsets. However, you can install gentoo from nearly any linux live cd, you don't have to use the gentoo live cd. So my advice is to use a recent live cd with a recent (2.6.23 or even better 2.6.24) kernel. _________________ Never argue with an idiot. This problem is, like schachti suggested, related to the old kernel on the installation disc. You can easily solve it in 4 steps:
1. Download the SystemRescueCD
2. Burn it to a disc.
3. Boot it up.
4. Install Gentoo from that live environment using these instructions.

Happen to know of a minimally and very recent livecd for an amd64 platform? I've got an intel quad-core I'm trying to install for. |

System rescueCd supports amd64 - IIRC, you enter "rescue64" at the boot prompt to boot a 64 bit kernel. |
