Hi all
I have just built a system from stage1 with the ac sources. I needed those since I have an Sil3112 SATA controller.
Everything seems fine. I get my kernel compiled, reboot on the new kernel and start to emerge xfree... A few seconds later it just stops - freezes. I can't CTRL-C or anything. I have to hard reset it.
I try to compile a new kernel on the system - and it fails the same way. The only time where I can complete a compile in when booting on the liveCD.
My CFLAGS are "-march=pentium3 -O3 -pipe"
My system:
ASUS P4G8X Deluxe with a Pentium4 2.4 Ghz and a Nvidia Ti4200 gfx adapter.
I am following the installation guide rather close.
The system runs rock solid in any other OS I have tried. |

uhm, maybe you have used acpi or other strange options in your compiled kernel?
does this problem occur when you boot from livecd and chroot to your environment and try to compile somthing?
uhm, and maybe pci-utils will help you finding out some irq problems or something. _________________ adopt an unanswered post

No ... the problem does not occur when I boot from the liveCD and chroot.
It only occurs when I boot on the kernel I have compiled myself.
I have disabled ACPI entirely.
What is it that I can do with pci-utils? Where can I find more info on that? |

I have similar problems too... I have an Asus P4PE motherboard and a P4/2.6. Only in my case the system freezes even when booting from the livecd & compiling X.
I don't know if something in X triggers the freeze, or it is just that is a big package to compile so the crash is more probable to occur when compiling X rather than a smaller package.
Also does the livecd get updated? My livecd is ~1 month old. _________________ Manolis |

Hi again, I booted without fb (nofb at the boot prompt +any options you like) and it seemed to helped. You can try it, although we have different graphics cards. _________________ Manolis |

I am having the same problem. 'emerge sync' and kernel compiling are fine with liveCD, but not with compiled gentoo-sources-2.4.20-r5. I noticed the kernel on liveCD is gentoo-xfs-2.4.20-r2. I will try to see whether the freeze happen with vanilla-sources-2.4.21. |
