I emegrged a few moment ago the xfree 4.2 in a gentoo installed with a stage3 package.

After some hours compiling, it worked fine, I ran the xf86config file, configured the server properly.

When I was to start the server with startx I found it was not on the path, so i executed it from the directory /usr/X11R6/bin and it failed to start leaving this message:

xauth: command not found
xinit: command not found

in various lines.

Any idea to solve the problem? Thanks

It seems that /etc/env.d/10xfree does not exist or is not being read...

Try "source /etc/profile" again.

Let me make sure I understand you. startx doesn't work. If you logout, then login, startx works. If you reboot & login, startx doesn't work? Then, logout and login makes startx work?

kinda.

you see, when in log in from a fresh reboot, it doesnt work. but then if i do a "source /etc/profile" it will work. but as soon as i reboot its back to normal and i have to do an "source /etc/profile" again.

so now it is just freaking weird. last night i shut my computer down and this time when i booted up, xdm started up. fine great. i had told it to do that before but for some reason it never worked until now. so i logged in to flux and attempted to bring up xterm. nothing. didnt even think about it. so after a minute of thinking about it i hit ctrl+alt+f2 and logged in. well, xterm was not in my path. once again, neither was startx. go figure. so i killed the xserver. not restarted it but killed it. and did a source /etc/profile. after that startx worked fine. i'm in flux now using xterm. what is going on here?

Stating the obvious, it sounds like /etc/profile is not being 'sourced' when you first login. I have no clue why this would happen, or where to look. I thought maybe the shell in /etc/passwd could be the issue, but you're using bash.

Are there updated/altered scripts that you haven't properly loaded?

Does etc-update (from gentoolkit) reveal any files that could interfere with the environment not being properly set?
