Brand new Gentoo install here. Finally got X at least FUNCTIONAL. Now, how did you tweak your settings for the best performance?
(asking since there seems to be tons of help for NVidia users in the guides but NONE for ATI...)
I just ran glxgears:
bash-2.05b# ./glxgears
Xlib: extension "XFree86-DRI" missing on display ":0.0".
339 frames in 6.0 seconds = 56.500 FPS
240 frames in 5.0 seconds = 48.000 FPS
Not what I'd expect of a Radeon 9700! So, what did I do wrong? What do you want to see? What did YOU do? |

emerge ati-drivers and then restart once that is done...upon restarting, log in and run the command: fglrxconfig
go through the configuration stuff and if you dont know what to do just choose there default settings...you are all done...just startx. by the way, if you are using an nforce2 mobo make sure to patch the kernel with the nvidia agpgart |

There is lots of information in these forums.
Look here
You might want to search on "ati", "radeon", "radeon 9700", a.o. to find more information.
And visit ati linux drivers petition.
Good luck,
