|
|
I'm using gentoo live cd 1.4r4 and have a Netgear MA401 pcmcia 802.11b nic on a dell inspiron 5150.
It sees the nic but no matter what i do I cant get it to talk to the ap.
When i try to ping after ifconfiging wlan0 i get
"p80211knetdev_hard_start_xmit: Tx attempt prior to association, frame dropped." |

i would suggest plugging it into the wall, then after you got it installed get drivers for the nic from the company |

askewview,
I got my laptop to install off of my wireless NIC. What I ended up doing was using Knoppix to detect my hardware (Orinoco Gold Card). Then I went into /etc/pcmcia/wireless.opts and changed the settings in there. (ESSID, encryption key (if applicable), etc.) Then what I had to do was restart the cardctl services.
Then physically plug the card back in. This will load the card with all the new settings. Then, I checked the card using
I just made sure there is an encryption key, the ESSID is set (you can also set the nickname). And also made sure i was associating with an AP. The Access Point's MAC address should show up in there.
After that I made sure that ifconfig was showing my loopback and eth0. Also make sure that eth0 has an IP address and subnet mask. I then tried pining my gateway and DNS servers.
Then I followed this thread https://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic.php?t=39998&highlight=installing+knoppix to get Knoppix set up for a Gentoo install.
Hope this helps.

I'm using that same card on a Dell Inspiron. What I suggest is installing from knoppix, it detects the card perfectly. |

In case you are still working on this install. The easy way is to use knoppix or Morphix Light. to get your net connection.
Download stage1,2,3 etc...
mkdir, and chroot as in the installation manual and start the installation from there. After you chroot Gentoo will automatically use the network connection supplied by the previous distribution. _________________ "I hate rude behavior in a man. Won't tolerate it!" |
