Please advise as to what procedure can be utilized to install Lilo on hdc drive while the drive resides in hdc slot. _________________ Please echo! |

An additional question regarding Lilo, ;
Can Lilo be used to boot an os on a hdd other than the drive upon which it is loaded?
Every instance I have encountered uses os's on the same drive in dual boot systems(or multi-boot).

you can install lilo on hdc but then when your system boot it will look at the mbr on hda and load what ever bootloader you have on hda and not the mbr on hdc so that is pointless! what you can do though is install lilo on hda with boot = /dev/hda in your lilo.conf but you can still have your Linux os on hdc in lilo.conf you would put root = /dev/hdc in your image section |

Thanks pard for post
As I understand your post, it requires that I utilize my present hda hdd, which has Debian installed in three flavors, redo it to include the gentoo os which would then install hdc for boot. Is this correct? This amounts to using one hdd to boot another hdd if I understand what you outline.
My system includes bios selection of boot permitting boot on all four mobo hdd's but Lilo seems to like only two, hda and hdb. Hdb is cdrom already involved with win98(hdd) and Debian (hda)
Is there any way to use Lilo for hdc boot without involving other drives? _________________ Please echo! |

ah.. all you need to do is edit the lilo.conf that you already use on hda and put this for your gentoo on hdc to load:
Code: |
image=/mnt/hdc/boot/vmlinuz
root=/dev/hdc1
label=gentoo
read-only
|
before you run lilo make sure you have mounted your hdc and have the correct path to your vmlinuz on the image line. |

Thanks for your post regarding the use of Lilo.
I am looking, however, for an independent Lilo boot of hdc with boot selected hdd of hdc for boot. I don't want interdependent operation...complete independent boot. _________________ Please echo! |

wouldn't that be more of a bios limitation? |

I guess you mean the following: the bios limits the use of boot to particular mehtods.
I am looking for a way to advance beyond the limitation without causing interdependent consequences.
My bios boot is selectable : all hdds in mobo but haven't found a loader program to load each independently..... _________________ Please echo! |

are you saying that in your bios you can say that the first boot device is /dev/hdc ? if so then I would think that something like the following lilo.conf would work:
Code: |
boot = /dev/hdc
map=/boot/System.map
install=/boot/boot.b
vga=normal
default=gentoo
lba32
prompt
delay=20
timeout=20
image=/boot/vmlinuz
root=/dev/hdc1 #adjust to where your / is
label=gentoo
read-only
|
if this doesn't work than maybe what your mobo is doing is switching the positions of the drive. ie if you say first boot is /dev/hdc than maybe it changes it to /dev/hda |

Aha.. there is a statement in Lilo from m.skovic the developer which utilizes lilo in hda to boot hdc... not independent.. and it does utilize the lilo from hda identifying it as ..bios 0x80
These data refer to old bios systems and Grub info I am not yet sure may do the same because most examples cover old bios setups.
I am hopeful someone has developed a way around the limitations... _________________ Please echo! |

Reply to your program listing:
I loaded the program initially as you have listed and received;
Invalid system disk
Replace the disk and press any key
This error means the MBR data cannot be recognized by boot because it is inco
rrect for the boot bios program... _________________ Please echo! |
