I know that this is a rather deadly combination of hardware, but others have got it to work... however, I haven't. I have:

1. emerged xfree and the ati-drivers
2. patched the kernel to get nforce agp working
3. used the nforce2-patched version of the ati-drivers to generate fglrx.o
4. ran fglrxconfig to generate my xf86config

agpgart.o and fglrx.o can both be insmodded without a problem, however, when I try to run X, I get this message:

Code:
(WW) fglrx: No matching Device section for instance (BusID PCI:2:0:1) found

It appears that X has found my monitor, since it seems to be changing resolution when I run startx. However, after a few seconds it returns me to my prompt.

Has anyone with experience with similar hardware run into this problem?

(my apologies if this text does not come out right... I'm using lynx)

The message you posted is actually just a warning - that's what the (WW) means. Error messages will start with (EE). AFAIK, that particular message isn't anything to worry about. I get the same thing with a Radeon 9800 & an nForce2, and everything works. If you post your XFree log file (/var/log/XFree86.0.log), it should show what the real problem is.

Ive never heard of the nforce2 patched version of the ati-drivers, where'd you get them. Anyways, what i found is that you have to emerge the ati-drivers after you have already patched and recompiled the kernel. My hardware is pretty much the same as yours. 9800 pro and an Nforce2 mobo. Why dont you re-emerge the ati-drivers and then try fglrxconfig again and see what happens

I think he means from here: http://www.wlug.org.nz/RadeonOnNforce
You don't need them if you're running a kernel that has nForce2 AGP support.
