Ciao,
Ho emerso kde-3.5.9 e si verifica questo problemino, verifico /etc/rc.conf XSESSION="kde-3.5", /etc/conf.d/xdm DISPLAYMANAGER="kdm-3.5", ma quando eseguo X non parte kde.
Cosa devo guardare?
Se servono altre info, chiedete

sicuro di avere upgradato tutti i pezzi di kde? ... io ne avevo lasciato indietro dei pezzi.
le mie variabili sono:
/etc/rc.conf -----> XSESSION="kde-3.5.9"
/etc/conf.d/xdm -----------> DISPLAYMANAGER="kdm"

sinceramente ho fatto solo un emerge --update --newuse --deep world . cmq verifico la lista dei pacchetti
Ho modificato i file come da te suggerito ma niente

Prova ad avviare KDE manualmente, ovvero non utilizzando il login grafico, e vedi se ti viene restituito qualche errore.

non utilizzo kdm , gdm etc etc ... , ho la pessima abitudine di far partire programmi e processi a manina 
Scen sei un mito , ho aggiunto '$ echo "exec startkde" > ~/.xinitrc' trovato nel link da te postato
Finalmente parte
Domandina, come mai con la 3.5.8 andava e con 3.5.9 ho dovuto aggiungere .xinitrc ? |

Mboh, misteri dell'informatica 
A parte gli scherzi, forse l'aggiornamento 3.5.8 -> 3.5.9 ha modificato qualche file di configurazione che ti segato il funzionamento che avevi prima.
