I hope this question is not too noobie for this forum but I was wondering how the minimal boot cd figures out what hardware you have and how it loads the correct modules for said hardware?

MillDaKill,

Welcome to gentoo.

There are no questions too noobie for our forum ... indeed the only silly question is the one you never ask.
The boot CD doesn't work out what hardware you have, it loads lots of modules, crosses its fingers and hopes the right ones for your hardware are in there somewhere.

It does look for your cdrom under lots of different device names but other than that, its pretty hit and miss.
e.g. if you have a 1Gbit network card, the liveCD usually will not find it without some help.
