still a child at heart, i break my toys. this includes vmware workstation 6. here are some issues i had installing it.
had a gzipped tar of it, didn't emerge it. an [emerge vmware-modules] pre install would make sense, though i didn't emerge the vmware-modules until after i had a functional vmware running a fully functional virtual machine; i could tell that it wasn't necessary.
http://www.linuxhelp.net/guides/vmware/ - got me started
didn't run sh configure or ./configure it was ./vmware-install.pl
issues arose regarding the rc0-6.d dirs
CTRL Z to quit mid-installation
http://gentoo-wiki.com/HOWTO_Install_VMWare_Server - Gentoo VMware wiki
i made my rc0-6.d dirs in /etc/runlevels
mkdir –p /etc/runlevels/rc{0,1,2,3,4,5,6}.d
accept defaults for each option, pressed q during network setup and eula to exit it.
installation finished ok
[vmware] gave me a dbus error
DONT [emerge --unmerge dbus], DO [/etc/init.d/dbus stop] and remember to start it
it also gave me a libvmwareui.so.0 undefined symbol error
http://princ3.wordpress.com/2007/05/30/vmware-workstation-60-on-gentoo/ --go here
instead of [vmware] use [VMWARE_USE_SHIPPED_GTK=yes vmware] to run vmware
at some point of me using vmware, it crashed and gave me a vmmod.ko error on restart
being kinda stupid i tried [modprobe vmmod], suprisingly it worked.
then it gave me a popup that said vmnet.ko wasn't found upon restart of vmware.
couldn't find a resolution to this problem other than reinstalling it. [./vmware-install.pl]
once i reinstalled it worked like a charm though, the previous saved virtual machine intact.
for sound issues, omg /dev/dsp isn't found, turn off the music you have blasting, unless
of course you have no sound, google "gentoo alsa wiki" or "gentoo oss wiki" or "gentoo asound.rc"
