Something is eating your RAM probably.
Let it beocome "ultra slow" and then open up the process monitor and look what app is using most of the memory.

The slowness is probably because all the important stuff is swapped avay and some punk program just keeps using memory :-)

that would be swapping...
with 4gb of ram u can have kde loaded all the time in the rap and don't really need swap.
edit /etc/sysctl.conf: (add if needed)
vm.swappiness = 10
you can even set it to 0... with so much ram

If you are using firefox -or thunderbird-, I guess that is probably the problem.

if you do as mardicas suggested earlier, open a process monitor when it's slow, any processes showing up with high cpu loads?

So, when you come back from not using the computer for a while, are you simply using top to find that X is eating 100% CPU?

I wonder if the problem is screensaver-related? Perhaps an OpenGL screensaver is trying to run without adequate hardware acceleration. tomas, try turning off screensavers and see if you still have the problem.

Ok, so it's not screensavers and the monitor suspend won't be the problem, either. Do you know if you are using software suspend for any other devices?

no, the solution would be to close firefox (i don't use thundrbird, so i wouldn't know), and open it every time you wanna use it

I've found the using firefox with heavy javascript or flash, and the leaving it open for hours would result on a system almost dead doing swap (my system has 2GB), until you run "killall -9 firefox-bin"

Do you have superkaramba running?

I had this issue with superkaramba and some nvidia-drivers. But fortunately after I switched to a newer driver version, the problem disappeared.

I guess you have to simply start testing with different combinations of programs.
Stop or unmerge programs and see wich one eats up all the memory.

I have noticed that when you run X for a LONG time then it starts to eat memory, but it does it very slowly.

Well I guess there are two possibilities: Either you shut down superkaramba every time you leave your computer alone for some while (that's what I did - but believe me, from time to time you definitely will forget to do it...) or you might try to switch to some other nvidia-driver (if you use them at all).

At the moment I'm using 169.12 with my 8600M GT and it seems to work flawlessly.
