hey guys i really need your help

ive been messing about with this for about a week and i get get kde3.5 back to a working status.

i installed kde4.0 (which i have since uninstalled but nevermind that) and lost the kdm entry for 3.5. since then i cant startkde (either from kdm after restoring the entry or from failsafe with /usr/kde/3.5/bin/startkde

from executing startkde i recieve

Code:
DBUS_SESSION_BUS_ADDRESS='unix:abstract=/tmp/dbus-5NkO1kmps0,guid=68f2e99a067d9855c307578947cd8b3c';
export DBUS_SESSION_BUS_ADDRESS;
DBUS_SESSION_BUS_PID=5867;
DBUS_SESSION_BUS_WINDOWID=8388609;

i cant see anything useful in /var/log and i have to restart X or nothing happens.

i have reemerged kde3.5.8 and 3.5.9 both with and without dbus to no joy. (and of course reemerged dbus and world)

really run out of ideas at this point and i uni is starting to get busy again so i dont have the time to keep messing about with it so help is very great fully received. any ideas on whats causing it? anything else i should post to help?

If you installed KDE4 then it uses its kdm.

Try this:
Code:

nano -w /etc/conf.d/xdm

DISPLAYMANAGER="kdm-3.5"

/etc/init.d/xdm restart

its not a kdm problem, i can select kde3.5 from the session menu but it just shows the back ground and does nothing.

if i go into failsafe (from the kdm session menu) and execute either startkde or ./usr/kde/3.5/bin/startkde then it echos the messages above then does nothing else

strange, I have it this way: (no idea why, but all works so why bother)

in /etc/conf.d/xdm I have DISPLAYMANAGER="xdm"

and in my /etc/rc.conf
XSESSION="kde-4.0" <- you need "kde-3.5"
DISPLAYMANAGER="kdm"

Try 'eix kdm' to see what versions you have installed.

Ok, sorry :)

Can you add a new user and try to log in as the new user?
It sounds like some files got frell'd in your .kde dir.
