ok so i am installing gentoo
and i am a linux noob
but i am going step by step through the install uinstructions
and sadly i am still at the networknig part
i access the net through a linsys 4 port router
i know the connection is good because i was using it with my windows and it worked fine then. i try and set an IP and i try and get dhcp to work
neither works
after setting the ip i go ifconfig
and it tells memy inet address is 127.0.0.1 and my mask is 255.0.0.0 and i doubt the rest is of consideration as those two points are obviously not what i want
i'm running at abit board with an onboard 100 mbit ethernet
i try pinging stuff also
no go
any idea's where i went wrong?
help a noob
(ps how is admin@zcereal.com already registered here when i own the domain???) |

I'm guessing the module for your onboard nic isn't getting loaded. Do you know what lan chipset the mb has? It should say somewhere in your motherboard docs or you might be able to figure it out by looking at the device manager in windows. |

figured out that part now
but thanks for the help
my next problem is that i can't get it to mount
i use the
# mount /dev/hda3 /mnt/gentoo
# mkdir /mnt/gentoo/boot
# mount /dev/hda1 /mnt/gentoo/boot
commands after creating the partitions
except that i still want my windows stuff intact (i'm weak). so hda3 is the boot, hda4 is the swap and since i could not create anymore primaries (1 and 2 used by windows) hda7 is just the general partition created as a logical partition
so currently that turns that command into
# mount /dev/hda7 /mnt/gentoo
# mkdir /mnt/gentoo/boot
# mount /dev/hda3 /mnt/gentoo/boot
any chance at all that this will work? |

Problem seems to have been solved via IRC. |
