Ok just found below and maybe this is something to do with it?

Code:

glxgears
NVIDIA: could not open the device file /dev/nvidiactl (Permission denied).
NVIDIA: Direct rendering failed; attempting indirect rendering.
60563 frames in 5.0 seconds = 12112.494 FPS

eselect shows:

Code:

eselect opengl show
nvidia

are you part of the video group:
Code:

jrb@Fluid ~ $ groups
adm wheel audio cdrom video games cdrw usb users jrb plugdev vboxusers
jrb@Fluid ~ $ ll /dev/nvidiactl
crw-rw---- 1 root video 195, 255 2008-03-17 18:49 /dev/nvidiactl

Also did you use the etqw-client and etqw-data ebuild from bugzilla?
https://bugs.gentoo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=196452 <- client
https://bugs.gentoo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=198078 <- data (needed if you use the cdinstall USE flag)

Are you kidding me, this game is STILL in an overlay?!@ What is this, 4-5 months now? The installer works perfectly fine, how hard is it to wrap that up in an ebuild?

Sounds to me like a problem with your graphics card, since it isn't able to use direct rendering. Does glxinfo say that direct rendering is working properly?

I used the ebuild which works fine, and yes it is very strange it is in overlay, but with issues at gentoo recently no surprise.

I got it working by using eselect to choose nvidia opengl and adding myself to video group.

Just have to get sound working and work out why it crashes after about 2 min of playing.

cheers

Ha, I was just about to edit and say that I think Naib was right with the video group thing.

But as far as the sound goes, search the forums for doom3 and quake4 sound issues. If I remember right, ETQW is the same issue as those 2 games. Something with OSS emulation or somewhere along those lines.
